Make a simple Taiwanese savory breakfast sandwich in under 10 minutes!
Let’s talk about breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day since it fuels your body to get through all the activities ahead. A hearty breakfast motivates me, thus allowing me to be more productive throughout the day. That’s how crucial breakfast is, and since today’s recipe originates from Taiwan, it’s good to note that people in Taiwan take their breakfast seriously. Whenever I visit Taiwan, it is difficult to skip breakfast because small shops and stalls line the streets, selling items from very traditional breakfast foods like meat bun (bao zi 包子), fried dough stick (you tiao 油条), scallion pancake (cong you bing 葱油饼), to more Westernized items like breakfast sandwiches and burgers. I enjoy both the traditional and more Westernized items and am sharing a quick and easy recipe today for a Taiwanese-style breakfast sandwich. It is SO delicious and incredibly easy to make.
The combination of ingredients for Taiwanese sandwiches is limitless, but common ingredients include ham, egg, cucumber, sausage patty, nut butter, and jam. These sandwiches are sold at food stands, shops/cafes, and convenience stores like 7-11 or FamilyMart. I have played around with the ingredients and have found my favorite combination to be shredded pork floss (rou song), mayonnaise, cucumbers, and egg… just 4 ingredients! However, with just 4 ingredients, you are including your protein, fats, and carbohydrates for a complete breakfast meal.
Bread: The recommended bread is milk bread. However, you may use any bread of choice. I used whole wheat bread to add some more fiber to my meal.
Pork floss: Any style and brand of shredded pork floss works.
Mayonnaise: Use plain mayonnaise or Japanese mayo. Do not use Miracle Whip, since it tastes sweet.
Egg: Pan fry so the egg yolk is slightly runny.
